Clincal Data Standards

Clinical Data Standards

The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology understand the importance of a common language for describing the evaluation, treatment and outcomes of patients with a range of cardiovascular conditions.  That's why they developed clinical data standards.  Besides the expertise of the members of the ACC/AHA Task Force on Clinical Data Standards and related Writing Committees, current scientific evidence, clinical trials, and national registries provide the foundation for selecting and defining data elements.

Clinical data standards are sets of standardized elements and corresponding definitions that can be used in a variety of data collection efforts. The hope is that these standards, now under development, will improve comparison of clinical outcomes between various trials and registries as well as facilitate data management in future trials and registries.  These standardized definitions also may improve quality-of-care assessment and provide a source for evaluating clinical performance measures.
