Course DescriptionThe overall goal of the conference is to enhance the ability of participants to pursue successful careers related to the epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease and the promotion of cardiovascular health through development of competencies related to grant writing, manuscript development, teaching, and clinical and public health practice. A select faculty of epidemiologists and biostatisticians and prevention researchers will present discussions, lectures and laboratory and tutorial sessions illustrating basic principles of cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention and their applications. There will be extensive group participation.
Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of the program, healthcare professionals, researchers, and public health practitioners should be able to: · Incorporate into research, teaching and/or practice, an increased understanding of the nature of cardiovascular health (CVH) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially coronary heart disease and stroke, and epidemiologic approaches to the investigation of these diseases. · Improve research productivity by applying the major epidemiologic approaches to the investigation of current research questions through collaborative, multidisciplinary development of research proposals. · Incorporate into grant writing, publications, teaching and practice an enhanced ability to critically evaluate epidemiologic evidence. · Compare and contrast study designs required to test specific hypotheses related to the distribution, risk factors and prognosis of cardiovascular disease in the population · Identify federal and foundation grant resources for carrying out cardiovascular disease epidemiology research · Increase activity in relevant cardiovascular health policy advocacy by acting on improved ability to recognize and evaluate the epidemiologic basis for policy and practice in CVD prevention and CVH promotion.
EligibilityCandidates will ordinarily be at the postdoctoral level and at a point in their careers at which the acquired research knowledge and skills will be used in the near term. Seminar FeesNone. AccommodationsCost is approximately $2,693.50 per person for 13 nights, single occupancy for a standard room or a private room in a townhouse. The rate for guests who are sharing your room is $919.71 or $80.80 per day, per person. Children’s Rate is $650.67 per child when sharing the same room as parent paying the single rate or $60.46 per day per child. This rate applies to ages 3-16. There is no charge for children 2 and under. If you wish to upgrade to a larger room or studio it is a $500 flat fee for the entire 13 night stay. If you wish to add a room for a guest or child the cost is 71.50 per day plus the guest charges listed above. Please note that upon acceptance to the program you will be sent a link to reserve your accommodations. These rates are based on availability. The cost for a studio is $500 more and you will be asked to pay the extra $500 if the townhome and standard rooms are sold out. All participants, including faculty, are required to reside at the Seminar location, the Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge. The faculty considers it most important that fellows and faculty dine and work together, often continuing discussions through meal times.
AccreditationContinuing Medical Education Accreditation – Physicians The American Heart Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Continuing Education Accreditation – Nurses The American Heart Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Travel Stipends· General Travel Stipend: A limited number of stipends may be available to assist with partial travel costs for fellows and trainees. · Minority Travel Stipend: A limited number of stipends covering travel and lodging may be available for eligible minority participants (African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans). To be eligible, the candidate must be either a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. Interested/qualified applicants must select either General Travel Stipend or Minority Travel Stipend on the application and submit a letter of request.) If partial support is necessary, it is important to acknowledge financial need at the time of initial application. It may not be possible to honor requests received at a later date.
