Synthesizing Lessons Learned from Get With The Guidelines (GWTG): The Value of Disease Based Registries in Improving Quality and Outcomes

  • From the four GWTG disease-specific registries, over 200 articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals, which are distilled in this paper into a concise review of particular use to policy makersthroughout the country and world.
  • The evidence shows that the performance improvement system can be implemented nationally and is associated with a substantial improvement in quality of care over a broad range of cardiovascular conditions in multiple settings.
  • GWTG data has the power to generate new knowledge; identify areas for future quality improvement efforts and measures; drive measure prioritization and construct; improve the development of measures, guidelines, and implementation strategies  to reduce racial and gender disparities; and determine the safety and effectiveness of therapies applied in routine practice.
