Instructions for the Beginning Grant-in-Aid and Science Development Grant Programs
Addresses items 1 thru 6 below:
- Assurance that the awardee will have an appointment and will be afforded the same opportunities for advancement as other faculty members of equivalent rank and time in grade;
- The applicant’s current position title and the applicant’s expected position title at award activation, with an explanation of the meaning of the title;
- Information regarding assignment of research space, including an explanation of the department’s space policy and/or the relationship of the applicant to the person to whom the space is assigned;
- The relationship to and name and title of the person to whom the applicant reports;
- The relationship of the applicant to any more senior investigators with which he/she will work;
- Your plans/expectations for the applicant’s development as an independent scientist, including the likelihood that the applicant will submit an independent proposal to the NIH over the next two years.

Instructions for the National Established Investigator Award
The EIA must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-4 below:
- The investigator’s promise and the impact the Established Investigator Award would have on his/her career;
- Your knowledge of the investigator’s past scientific accomplishments and publications;
- The investigator’s demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases;
- The institution’s commitment to the investigator.
Complete the letter and return it to the applicant by e-mail. The applicant will upload it to his/her electronic application.
Note: The applicant cannot submit his/her application without your letter; therefore it is important that you meet the applicant’s deadline.

Instructions for the ASA-Bugher Centers of Excellence in Stroke Collaborative Research
A Bugher scientific research project application must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-4 below:
- The investigator’s academic appointment, career stage and promise;
- Your knowledge of the investigator’s past scientific accomplishments and publications;
- The investigator’s demonstrated commitment to stroke research;
- The institution’s commitment to the investigator and their participation in the ASA-Bugher Centers of Excellence in Stroke Collaborative Research.
Complete the letter and return it to the applicant by e-mail. The applicant will upload it to his/her electronic application.
