Creating the Mentoring Plan - 5 pg

To judge the merit of the application, reviewers will comment on certain criteria.  See the criteria for your program type. 

The mentoring plan is limited to five (5) pages for the following program: 
  • Mentor/AHA Mentee Award
Before beginning the Mentoring Plan, review the program description noting especially the qualifications and any restrictions for the program for which you are applying, and peer review criteria.  The Mentoring Plan should address the peer review criteria. 

FORMAT/TYPE REQUIREMENTS

The Mentoring Plan must be created as a Word-processed document, converted to a Portable Document Format (PDF) file, and uploaded to Grants@Heart.  Only PDF files will be accepted.  When creating the Research Plan, you must comply exactly with the association's format/type requirements and page limits.   Failure to comply will result in the administrative withdrawal (disqualification) of the application.
  • Only Portable Document Format (PDF) files will be accepted.
  • File must be single-spaced. 
  • No more than 15 characters per inch (cpi) or an average of no more than 15 cpi (cpi includes symbols, punctuation and spaces).
  • No less than ¾" margins allowed.
  • Sixty lines per page are the maximum allowed (The average number of lines per page using the font and point size below will be approximately 50-55 lines).
  • Arial Font style, 12 point font size for Windows users; Helvetica Font style, 12 point font size for Macintosh users
  • Figures, charts, tables, graphics and legends may be smaller in size but must be clear and legible.
  • Five-page limit

Users of other Word-processing programs must adjust settings appropriately and should measure text after saving and printing as a PDF.  Type requirements should be checked using a standard measuring device (such as a ruler), rather than relying on the font selected for a particular word processing/printer combination.  Type size specifications must be observed in the text of your mentoring plan or the application will not be reviewed and will be withdrawn. Adherence to font and margin requirements is necessary.  No applicant should have an advantage over other applicants by providing more content in his/her application by using smaller, denser type. The AHA has the responsibility to make the final determination of conformance to format requirements and the authority to withdraw applications.  This decision is final and not subject to appeal.

Internet Web site addresses (URLs) may not be used to provide information necessary to the review because reviewers are under no obligation to view the Internet sites.  Moreover, the reviewers are cautioned not to directly access an Internet site as it could compromise their anonymity.

If this application is a "resubmission" of a previous proposal, mark changes within the Research Plan by using brackets, italics or bold (do not shade or underline changes).  A separate document addressing modifications is also required.  Go here for instructions

Type the mentoring plan specifically following the outline given below, in the same sequence.  All items should be addressed.  Indicate N/A or None if not applicable to this application.  The suggested lengths (in parenthesis) are guidelines only; the entire proposed mentoring plan must not exceed the 5-page limit.
 

  1. Mentoring experience and track record (1 page)

    Provide evidence of a track record of mentoring productive fellows and other trainees.  Include information about your experience in providing the proposed research training, as evidenced by your career evolution, productivity, extramural funding, publication record, and the productivity of your prior trainees.
     
  2. Demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases (1/2 - 1 page)

    Provide documentation noting your ongoing commitment to research in CVD or cerebrovascular diseases. Include information about your research accomplishments in basic, clinical, or population science related to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Address how any proposed studies continue to illustrate your commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science.  Include information about national recognition and awards within your chosen field. 
     
  3. Prior or current independent national-level awards (1/2 page)

    Give a history of your prior and current independent national awards, including NIH R01 and equivalent grants, plus detailed information about other significant extramural funding.  Include prior and current funding for mentoring activities.
     
  4. Mentoring Plan and Approach (approx. 2 - 2  1/2 pages)

    Provide a comprehensive mentoring plan which details how you will facilitate the development of mentees.  Include information about potential impact of the proposed mentoring plan.  For example, how often do you plan to meet with the mentee(s)? Describe activities for virtual communication strategies, teleconferences, networking, training, etc.

    Note: the published program description for the AHA mentor award included information provided by AHA-funded early-career faculty who expressed interest in having mentors for their projects.  If you are submitting this application as a result of reading one or more of those interest areas provided by potential mentees, please provide information about your expertise in that particular area and your proposed mentoring plan for the trainee in this section of the document.    
     
  5. Environment (up to 1/2 page)

    Describe your overall scientific environment and how it will contribute to the probability of success for this mentoring opportunity.  How does the proposed mentoring plan benefit from unique features within your scientific environment?  If applicable, include information that describes subject populations, and/or descriptions of innovative and unique collaborations.

Note: A document that exceeds the page limit will be rejected by Grants@Heart.
