What the Million Hearts Initiative Means for Stroke

  • The Million Hearts initiative is a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), other agencies within Health and Human Services and several non-profit and private organizations such as the AHA/ASA.
  • Million Hearts goal:  To prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years by reducing risk factors attributed to them through clinical and community based prevention initiatives.
  • Community prevention strategies include - reduce treatment need by: strengthening tobacco control and reducing smoking through evidence-based interventions, community transformation grants, and decreasing sodium, trans fat consumption in the diet.
