    • Diabetes alone does not provide the complete risk of mortality; rather, comorbidities associated with diabetes have a profound effect on mortality and morbidity rates.
    • While hypertension continues to be associated with CVD, in T2DM it is not an indicator of a higher risk of mortality, especially if no proteinuria is present.
    • A major mortality risk in diabetes is chronic renal failure and/or proteinuria.
