New Open Access Journal NOW LIVE!The AHA continues to set the gold standard for publishing cardiology and stroke research with the introduction of a new online-only, peer-reviewed, Open Access publication to its portfolio of 11 scientific journals. Welcome
JAHA — Journal of the American Heart Association!JAHA provides a global forum for basic and clinical research articles and timely reviews on cardiovascular disease and stroke. As an Open Access journal, its content is rapidly and freely available, accelerating the translation of strong science into effective practice.
Read the inaugural editorial by Joseph A. Vita, MD, Editor-in-Chief.

Mortality Rates in Trials of Subjects With Type 2 Diabetes
- First study to evaluate the impact on exercise walking distance by the type of antiplatelet used in peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients with intermittent claudication.
- Greater improvement in vascular morbidity and mortality is seen in symptomatic PAD patients taking clopidogrel vs. aspirin.
- After 3 months aspirin isn’t associated with an improvement in walking distance in patients with intermittent claudication compared to clopidogrel.

Incremental Reduction in Risk of Death Associated With Use of Guideline-Recommended Therapies in Patients With Heart Failure: A Nested Case-Control Analysis of IMPROVE HF
- Heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood through the heart to meet the body's need for blood and oxygen.
- About six million Americans suffer from heart failure, but while the prevalence of this disease has increased over time, deaths from it have not.

Effector Memory T cells Are Associated With Atherosclerosis in Humans and Animal Models
- This study seeks to understand how CD4+T-cell subsets are related to the atherosclerosis process.
- In humans and in animal models the effector memory T cell subset (TEM) was associated with an increase in atherosclerosis as well as coronary artery disease.
- When these T cells block T-cell antigen dependent recognition in experimental models, protection against atherosclerosis has been demonstrated.

Relationship of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale to 30-Day Mortality in Medicare Beneficiaries With Acute Ischemic Stroke
- In the U.S. stroke is a leading cause of death, disability, and related costs.
- 30-day mortality in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a potential quality target of hospital-level performance for Medicare beneficiaries.
- In earlier studies, the NIHSS, an assessment tool for initial stroke severity, has been able to predict mortality risk in AIS.

Effect of Aspirin Versus Clopidogrel on Walking Exercise Performance in Intermittent Claudication: A Double-Blind Randomized Multicenter Trial
