Mission Statement

Council members are American Heart Association volunteers. The Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia includes surgeons, anesthesiologists and scientists interested in cardiac, vascular and thoracic interventions. The council is involved in a full range of American Heart Association activities, including basic science and clinical trials. Specific goals of the council are to improve application of established surgical procedures and anesthetic techniques, increase awareness of new issues in the field of cardiovascular surgery and anesthesia, and disseminate new knowledge to increase the number of patients who may benefit from safer and more effective surgical treatment. All cardiovascular surgeons, thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists and other professional colleagues are encouraged to become council members.

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or trouble understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination
Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Message from the Chair The Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia continues to work on improving and fostering education, research and clinical care of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery.	Awards, Lectures & Scholarships The CVSA council proudly sponsors numerous award programs which honor outstanding researchers, early career investigators or medical students.	Fellowship Fellowship provides a means to recognize council members for outstanding contributions to the field and service to the American Heart Association (AHA).

Funding Opportunities The method for applying for funding is Web-based, using our electronic system, Grants@Heart	Council Committees The CVSA is comprised of professionals who serve as experts on issues related to cardiovascular surgery and anesthesia in cardiovascular disease.
