Mission Statement

The mission of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences is to improve understanding of mechanisms of basic cardiovascular regulation to allow development of effective new interventions to better diagnose, treat, and prevent cardiovascular disease. Special emphasis is placed on integrating molecular/cellular and physiological approaches that elucidate mechanisms of functional genomics and cell signaling processes involved in maintenance of normal heart rhythm, myocardial function, and circulatory responsiveness to metabolic demands throughout life.

Leadership Committee

  • Conduct the affairs of the council in the intervals between regular meetings of the council.
  • Carry out the objectives of the council within the policies of the American Heart Association.

Communications and Membership Committee  

  • Promote communication and unity of purpose among the varied members of the council.
  • Provide access to timely information about the council's goals, trends and developments of interest to the members, relevant legislative issues, important meetings and pertinent information about the AHA such as the research program.

Nominating Committee

  • Promote excellence in the field of basic cardiovascular science through selection, recruitment, training, retention and recognition of qualified volunteers in leadership positions in the council and the American Heart Association.

Program Committee

  • Promote and enhance the council’s role at Scientific Sessions through developing excellent and varied scientific programs in the council’s fields of expertise.

Annual Conference Planning Committee

  • Ensure that the scientific program reflects the most advanced, credible and significant science available in basic cardiovascular sciences research.
  • Serve as the critical link between the professional interests of council members and this major venue and the Council Leadership Committee.

Katz Prize Selection Committee

  • Promote and enhance the role of basic cardiovascular sciences through recognition and support of early career investigators who contribute significantly to the advancement of the council’s and AHA’s science mission.

Marcus Prize Selection Committee

  • Promote and enhance the role of basic cardiovascular sciences through recognition and support of early career investigators who contribute significantly to the advancement of the council’s and AHA’s science mission.
