CVRI Minority Travel Stipends

Updated:Aug 27,2014
Sponsored by the Council on Cardiovascular Radiology and Intervention

Application Deadline August 11, 2014

The American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Radiology and Intervention (CVRI) is offering a travel grant to minority early career investigators and students to attend AHA Scientific Sessions. The travel grant will cover transportation and hotel costs up to $500 related to attending the conference.  (Conference registration is not included.)  Grants will be issued after the conference upon submission of travel receipts to the AHA. The award will serve to honor accomplished minority students and investigators while enabling them to get more involved in the AHA and in Scientific Sessions. This award promotes CVRI Council membership, the benefits of involvement in the AHA, and supports the AHA’s encouragement of minority involvement in AHA activities.

Award Information (click on the sections below for more information)

    1. The candidate must be a minority by the standard NIH definition: He or she belongs to a minority group underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral science careers, based on their minority group's representation in the total population. This includes American Indians (including Alaskan Natives, Eskimos and Aleutians), Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders, African Americans and Hispanics.  Other candidates considered a minority are those from medically underserved populations with low socio-economic status and those living in rural areas to include whites.
    2. Hispanic countries include the following: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela
    3. The candidate must be a U.S. citizen, a noncitizen national (born in American Samoa or Swains Island), or a U.S. permanent resident.
    4. The candidate must hold an academic (or equivalent) rank below associate professor (e.g., assistant professors, instructors, postdocs, fellows and students).  If the candidate is a faculty member, he or she must be within the first four years of the faculty appointment.
    5. The applicant must be a member of the CVRI Council at the time of the award.

    • All applicants for travel grants must be members of the AHA/ASA at any level.  If you need to become an AHA/ASA Professional Member, you should do so no later than August 2 due to the time needed to process the membership number required on your award application form.   Learn more about AHA membership.
    • Applicant must be active in cardiovascular radiology and/or intervention research and still be in training as an undergraduate or pre-doctoral student; a fellow who has completed training only within the last four years; or be a Ph.D./M.D. in the first four years after the first faculty appointment.
    • Abstract must be submitted to the AHA Scientific Sessions in one of the CVRI Council’s primary abstract categories in accordance with the AHA's rules and regulations for submitting abstracts.  Please view the listing of abstract categories associated with this travel award.  If your abstract is not accepted in a CVRI-sponsored category, you are not eligible to apply for this specific grant.
    • Abstract must be accepted for oral or poster presentation at the AHA Scientific Sessions and the applicant must be the first and presenting author.
    • Applicants may apply for a travel stipend multiple times with different abstracts as long as the applicant is the presenting author on each abstract.  However, an applicant is eligible to receive only one travel stipend, even if multiple abstracts are accepted to Scientific Sessions.
    • Winners are not eligible to re-enter the competition in subsequent years.
    • Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Deadline

All applications must be received through the Council Awards Application System by 5 p.m. Central Standard Time on Aug 11, 2014.   Applicants should apply as early as possible before the deadline to allow time to address any submission issues.  Applicants needing to join the AHA should do so by no later than August 6 for the membership to be processed in time to receive the membership number required for the application form.
